Ingredients
Scale
- 1 medium-sized apple (grated or pureed, seeds and core removed)
- 1 medium-sized carrot (grated or pureed)
- 1 cup whole wheat flour (or gluten-free alternative)
- 1/2 cup rolled oats
- 1/4 cup unsweetened applesauce
- 1 egg
Instructions
- Wash the apple and carrot thoroughly and remove the apple’s seeds and core. Grate or puree both ingredients.
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the whole wheat flour and rolled oats. Mix well.
- In a separate bowl, whisk the egg and stir in the applesauce, grated apple, and carrot.
- Gradually mix the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients until a sticky dough forms.
- Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and knead it until smooth. Roll the dough out to about 1/4-inch thickness.
- Using a cookie cutter, cut out the desired shapes and place them on a parchment-lined baking sheet.
- Preheat your oven to 325°F (163°C) and bake the treats for 30–35 minutes, or until golden brown and hard.
- For extra crunch, leave the treats in the oven for an additional hour after turning it off.
- Let the treats cool completely before storing or serving to your dog.
Notes
- Store in an airtight container for up to 2 weeks or freeze for up to 3 months.
- For grain-free options, use gluten-free flour instead of whole wheat flour.
- Make sure the apple is completely seed-free, as seeds can be harmful to dogs.
- Cut treats into smaller pieces for puppies or small dogs.
