Ingredients
Scale
- 1 medium-sized carrot, finely grated (about ½ cup)
- 1 small apple, peeled, cored, and finely grated (about ½ cup)
- 2 cups whole wheat flour (or oat flour for a gluten-free option)
- 1 large egg
- 2 tablespoons unsweetened applesauce
- 2 tablespoons honey (optional)
- ½ teaspoon cinnamon (optional)
- 1 tablespoon water (if needed, to adjust dough consistency)
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone mat.
- Peel and grate the carrot and apple finely.
- In a large mixing bowl, whisk the egg and applesauce together. Add honey and cinnamon if using.
- Stir in the grated carrot and apple, mixing well.
- Gradually fold in the flour until a soft dough forms. Add water if the dough is too dry.
- Roll out the dough on a floured surface to ¼-inch thickness.
- Cut into shapes using a mini bone cookie cutter or other shapes.
- Place on the prepared baking sheet and bake for 20–25 minutes until golden brown and firm.
- Let the treats cool completely before serving.
Notes
- For gluten-free treats, use oat flour instead of whole wheat flour.
- Adjust baking time for chewier or crunchier treats as needed.
- Store in an airtight container at room temperature for a week, refrigerate for up to two weeks, or freeze for up to three months.
- Always remove apple seeds before using, as they are toxic to dogs.
