Ingredients
Scale
- 1 cup finely grated carrots (about 2 medium carrots)
- 1 ½ cups rolled oats (plain, unsweetened)
- ½ cup unsweetened applesauce
- 1 tablespoon honey (optional)
- 1 egg
- ¼ cup pumpkin puree (optional)
- 1 tablespoon ground flaxseed (optional)
- 1 tablespoon natural peanut butter (optional, ensure it’s xylitol-free)
Instructions
- Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- Mix Ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, combine grated carrots, rolled oats, applesauce, honey (if using), and the egg. Stir until well combined.
- Prepare the Dough: If adding pumpkin puree, flaxseed, or peanut butter, mix them in now. The mixture should be slightly wet but not runny.
- Spread on Baking Sheet: Spread the mixture evenly on the prepared baking sheet to about a ¼-inch thickness. Use a rolling pin for an even thickness if desired.
- Score the Bars: Before baking, use a knife or pizza cutter to score the dough into bars, making it easier to break apart after baking.
- Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes or until the edges are golden brown and the bars are firm to the touch.
- Cool: Let the bars cool on the baking sheet for about 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
- Serve and Store: Break or cut the cooled bars along the scored lines. Serve immediately or store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to a week. Freeze for longer storage.
Notes
- Storage: Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to one week or freeze for up to three months.
- Substitutions: You can substitute oat flour or rice flour for rolled oats if desired. Avoid wheat flour for dogs with gluten sensitivities.
- Customization: Feel free to add dog-safe ingredients like a small amount of cooked chicken or turkey for added protein.
- Crunchier Bars: For a crunchier texture, turn off the oven after baking and let the bars cool inside the oven completely.
