Description
Sweet Potato and Apple Chewy Sticks for Dogs are healthy, homemade treats packed with nutrients and natural flavors.
Ingredients
Scale
- 2 medium sweet potatoes (peeled and diced)
- 1 large apple (peeled, cored, and chopped)
- 1 tablespoon coconut oil
- 1–2 tablespoons water (if needed for blending)
- 1/4 cup whole wheat flour or oat flour (optional, for binding)
- A pinch of cinnamon (optional)
Instructions
- Steam or boil the diced sweet potatoes and apple until they are soft and tender, about 10-15 minutes.
- Transfer the cooked sweet potatoes and apple to a blender or food processor. Add the coconut oil and blend into a smooth puree. Add water as needed to achieve the right consistency.
- In a mixing bowl, combine the puree with the flour. Knead gently until a pliable dough forms. Add more flour if the mixture feels sticky.
- Preheat the oven to 300°F (150°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- Shape the dough into stick shapes, about 1/4 inch thick, and place them on the prepared baking sheet.
- Bake the sticks for 30-40 minutes, flipping them halfway through. Adjust baking time for a softer or crunchier texture.
- Remove from the oven and let the sticks cool completely before serving.
Notes
- Store the treats in an airtight container at room temperature for up to one week, in the fridge for two weeks, or freeze for up to three months.
- Ensure the apple seeds and core are removed as they can be harmful to dogs.
- For a gluten-free option, use oat flour instead of whole wheat flour.
- You can add a small amount of peanut butter (xylitol-free) for extra flavor.
